Regulatory posture
BPC-157 is not approved by the FDA for any indication and has no marketing authorization in the United States. In 2023 the FDA placed BPC-157 in a category of substances that are difficult to compound and raised concerns about its safety and characterization, which limits lawful 503A and 503B compounding. It is not a controlled substance under the DEA, but it is prohibited in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Mechanism, plain English
BPC-157 is a lab made string of 15 amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) based on a protein found in stomach fluid. In animal studies it appears to help tissues heal by encouraging new blood vessels to grow (a process called angiogenesis) and by influencing growth signals in muscle, tendon, and gut tissue. How it works in humans is still poorly understood because almost all of the mechanism data come from animals.
Evidence landscape
The published human evidence for BPC-157 is very limited, and most of what exists comes from rodent studies. A 2025 systematic review in orthopaedic sports medicine found that nearly all supporting data are preclinical, with no adequately powered randomized controlled trials in people to confirm efficacy for tendon, muscle, or joint healing. A 2025 narrative review reached a similar conclusion and emphasized safety uncertainty, product quality concerns, and the absence of long-term human data. A small 2025 pilot study reported that intravenous BPC-157 was tolerated in a limited group of participants, but it was not designed to establish efficacy and involved few subjects. Taken together, the literature supports interest but does not support efficacy or safety conclusions in humans.
